Why Debit Cards are Right for your Business
The use of debit card payments has expanded rapidly over the past few years. For many, debit cards have become the payment option of choice. Any merchant that currently accepts checks or credit cards can benefit from debit card processing. Initially, you may associate debit card processing primarily with grocery outlets. But any merchant who handles a high percentage of cash and check transactions for low-dollar purchases - including gas stations, convenience stores, fast food restaurants or retail stores - can reap the rewards of debit.
Online and off-line debit authorizations
ABTEK can help you process online (PIN-based) and off-line (signature-based) debit card transactions. We simply program both types into a terminal to operate in conjunction with your regular credit card POS services.
Online Debit
The cardholders ATM or check card, Personal Identification Number (PIN) and a magnetic-stripe reader are used at the point of sale to provide fast, efficient online processing of purchases. The POS terminal dials for an authorization directly to the card issuer, and the cardholder~s checking account is immediately debited for the transaction. Your customer will appreciate the speed and convenience of this payment choice.
Off-Line Debit
MasterCard and Visa-branded debit cards, often referred to as check cards, may be accepted at any credit card POS terminal. Unlike online debit transactions, off-line purchases are debited to the cardholders checking account within 2 to 3 business days rather than immediately. Funds are verified at the time of purchase and the merchant is guaranteed payment. If the card issuer is unavailable for an authorization, then MasterCard or Visa can provide a stand-in authorization.
Benefits of Debit Card Acceptance
Fast Approvals
No counting change, recording identification information, or calling for check approvals from store managers. Transactions are authorized in a matter of seconds, just like credit cards.
Fraud Prevention
Purchase amounts are 100% authorized at the time of sale, reducing losses due to fraudulent checks. And, with more plastic transactions, the amount of case on hand can be reduced - helping to prevent losses due to theft.
Minimum Investment
ust add a low-cost PIN pad that works with your existing equipment. We offer affordable lease and purchase options for PIN pads.
Security
Online debit transactions are encrypted to protect the integrity of the cardholders personal banking information. Your terminal is programmed to facilitate this encryption for proper authorization. Security for off-line debit transactions (processed similar to credit card sales) is provided by the cardholders signature on the sales draft.
Increased Sales
Statistics show that the average ticket sale amount isincreased with debit acceptance.
Major Brand Acceptance
With ABTEK, you can accept all debit cards at no additional cost or effort. For a complete list of debit card brands, see reverse.
Cash Management
Funds are made available to you sooner than with personal checks. Debit transactions are funded within two to three business days of batch settlement.
Online and Offline Authorizations
No need to ask your customers what kind of debit card theyre using. We?ll help you accept both.
Easy Start-Up
For new merchants, equipment is deployed ready to accept debit card transactions. For current merchants, just complete the debit network selection forms and well schedule a convenient time to download new software instructions to your terminal and show you how it works.
How Debit Card Processing Works
Online debit transactions require an authorization directly from the bank where the account resides. Each time a merchant swipes an ATM or debit card through a POS terminal; the terminal will prompt the cardholder to key in a confidential PIN. The card issuing bank will not authorize the transaction unless the PIN is entered correctly. The terminal may also prompt the merchant or cardholder for cash back, allowing the cardholder to receive cash back over the amount of the actual purchase. Once all of this information is collected, the terminal will transmit the data through the appropriate network, and to the customers bank. The bank will authorize or decline the transaction and return the response message to the merchants debit terminal.
Offline debit transactions (signature-based) are processed by Visa or MasterCard. The card issuing bank is still contacted for authorization; if unavailable, however, MasterCard or Visa is able to provide a stand-in authorization. Once the transaction is either authorized or declined, the response message is transmitted back to the merchant.
Keep in mind, both types of debit transactions are processed within a matter of seconds. Debit transactions take no longer to process than credit card transactions and are funded within two to three days after the batch is settled.
